Wojtek was just an orphaned Syrian bear cub when a group of teenaged Polish soldiers, many of whom were orphans themselves, took him into their ranks during World War ll. Wojtek quickly became a beloved and important member of the Polish II Corps, first as a pet, then as a comrade who was given the rank of corporal. After the war ended, Wojtek found a new home in Edinburgh Zoo. This picture book includes background information based on interviews with the soldiers and their descendants, photographs, suggestions for further reading, and more.
