This sumptuously illustrated book explores 20 gardens which inspired and sustained artists – such as Cezanne's house in the south of France, Monet at Giverny, and Childe Hassam at Celia Thaxter's garden on Appledore Island, Maine. Some artists, including Pierre Bonnard and his neighbour Monet were keen gardeners, as much in love with their plants as their work; for others like Sorolla in Madrid, his courtyard home was sanctuary and source of ideas. These gardens, many of which can be visited today. also illuminate the professional motivation and private lives of the artists.
