CHARLESTON: A BLOOMSBURY HOUSE AND GARDEN (PB)

Artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant transformed Charleston, a farmhouse in the Sussex Downs, into a work of art and created a rural retreat for the Bloomsbury group. With specially comissioned photography, this is the story of the house, linking it with the cultural figures who spent time there, including Vanessa’s sister Virginia Woolf, Maynard Keynes, Lytton Strachey and Roger Fry. Taking readers through each room of the house it relates personal stories, including having T.S. Eliot over for a dinner party, and details the artistic techniques used to embellish and enliven the once simple farmhouse.
