Lesmahagow, a small village in Lanarkshire, may seem unremarkable. Yet inventors from Lesmahagow designed new machines such as the pedal bike and experimented with innovative industrial developments at neighbouring New Lanark. From a particular class of 1924, two boys became knights of the realm and another a cabinet minister. Another village boy, John Cairncross, is best known as the fifth Cambridge spy. Andrew C.
