Bill McLaren’s unforgettable description of Doddie Weir - ‘on the charge like a mad giraffe’ - sums up his charisma, energy and prowess. He was capped 61 times for Scotland, played for Melrose, Newcastle Falcons, Borders and the Lions, and was the first Player of the Five Nations. An award-winning after-dinner speaker, in 2017 Weir was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease. With the same tenacity and spirit he showed on the rugby pitch, he continues to raise funds and awareness for MND research and support organisations.
