Written by Bernard Leach, the father of British studio pottery, this seminal book, first published in 1940s, was the first treatise to be written by a potter on the workshop traditions handed down from the greatest period of Chinese ceramics in the Sung dynasty. Subsequently updated, it offers potters today everything they need to learn, from how to adapt recipes for pigments and glazes to designing kilns. With his writings as well as with his ceramics, Leach played a major role in elevating the status of the European potter from craftsman to artist, thereby paving the way for the twentieth-century studio pottery movement.
