Street Reads is an Edinburgh-based initiative from Simon Community Scotland offering a library and safe space for people experiencing homelessness to read, relax and access support services. It was the idea and project of Rachel Cowan, known in Edinburgh as Book Wumman. Rachel understood the devastating impact of homelessness and the power of books to bring adventure, romance, excitement or mystery into lives used to darker drama.

Street Reads has since expanded its range of services to widen access to reading, offering reading glasses, activities, classes, events and audio books, alongside the technology to listen to them.

Bookspeed Managing Director Lewis Dawson said: “We are thrilled to be able to support the excellent work of Street Reads. We are passionate about the power of reading to enhance people’s lives and we feel very strongly that everyone should be able to access books. It’s a privilege to be able to support such an important initiative.”

Street Reads was selected after receiving the majority of votes in a staff poll.
