In the 1830s and 40s the district of Glendale on Skye was swamped by immigrants cleared from other North Skye estates. The overcrowding created simmering anger - not against the incomers, but against the landowners who regarded their tenants as no better than chattels. This is the story of what happened when the discontent erupted and a full-scale land-war ensued, involving the police, factors and bailiffs, the courts, the navy gunboat HMS Jackal and the Prime Minister himself - and how the Glendale martyrs changed Scottish crofting forever.
