RISOTTO WITH NETTLES: A MEMOIR WITH FOOD

When war came to Italy, everything changed for Anna Del Conte. Her family had to abandon their Milan apartment for the countryside, where the peasants still ate well; she threw herself into a ditch as strafing Allied planes flew over; and she was twice imprisoned on suspicion of involvement with the partisans. Her story is informed and enlivened by the food of her native land - from lemon granita to wartime risotto with nettles, from vitello tonnato to horsemeat roll, from pastas to porcini.
