James I of England has been both savagely caricatured and defended to excess. He remains a perplexing and curious figure - shot through with inconsistencies, undermined by vices and foibles which failed to settle the country after Elizabeth’s troubled final years, and helped entrench the tensions which led to civil war. A well-meaning but flawed foreigner in a divided kingdom, his passionate commitment to the principles of monarchy would ironically prove to be his undoing.
