Bookspeed trading update – 23rd March 2020
Dear colleagues, customers, and suppliers,
We are living in truly unprecedented times. As the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus continues to spread, we are all being asked to play our essential roles in protecting our families, our communities, and most importantly our NHS who in turn will look after our fellow citizens in their time of greatest need.
Bookspeed has always been about community – whether that be how we conduct our relationships with customers and suppliers, or more specifically ensuring we are providing an inclusive, safe and healthy working environment for our employees.
We also believe strongly in the power of books and reading and we know that for many, reading is going to provide comfort and an escape for many over the weeks and months ahead.
However, what is most important right now is that we play our part in protecting and supporting not only our staff but also the communities within which they live. Whilst we have been able to set up remote working for all our office-based staff, this is simply not an option for our colleagues who work in our warehouses.
Given the critical role that staying at home and reducing in-person contact has to play in mitigating the severity of the Covid-19 outbreak, we have made the decision to close the business until further notice.
This decision has not been taken lightly. We are aware that some of our customers, predominantly those who trade online, are still busy and looking for stock. We are deeply sorry that we will not be able to continue supporting you over the next period, but our conscience and values as a business dictate that we must be considerate corporate citizens and not put our people at risk.
All our employees will receive full pay for March and April, supported by the Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme. We will do all we can to support our people through this difficult time.
We will continue to monitor the situation and reopen for business as soon as it is safe to do so.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support, we look forward to continuing to work together once this is over to create a bright and vibrant future for all our businesses.
In this extraordinary time, we urge you to take care, be kind, and look after each other.
Lewis Dawson, Annie Rhodes, Kingsley Dawson and all the Bookspeed Team
