Description
Born just three years apart in 1857 and 1860 into very different circumstances in Glasgow, the careers and lives of architects James Miller and John James Burnet became intertwined as they competed for work against the background of the booming Empire's 'Second City'. Burnet's works included The Athenaeum on Buchanan Street, Charing Cross Mansions and the Townhouses on University Avenue as well as works in London. Miller's works included The Empire Exhibition of 1901, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Glasgow Central Station, Wemyss Bay Station, St Enoch's Underground Station, Gleneagles Hotel and the interior of the SS Lusitania.
